JAMES DAY HODGSON (1915 – 2012)

American Politician and Diplomat

Hodgson served as the United States Secretary of Labor under Richard Nixon, between 1970-1973. After this he took up the post of Ambassador to Japan between 1974-1977. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living former Cabinet member in the United States.

JEAN DE BROGLIE (1921 – 1976)

French Politician

De Broglie was from the House of Broglie, a noble French family. He held various positions in the Foreign Affairs department during the 1960s. In 1976 he was assassinated by gunshot while leaving his tax advisor’s home.

German Politician

Schmidt was an influential figure in European politics during the second half of the 20th Century. He was Chancellor of Germany from 1974-1982. Before this he held roles as the Minister for Finance and Defense.

Polish Economist and Politician

Drozniak was President of the National Bank of Poland during the 1940s and 1950s. Between 1961 and 1966 he was Poland’s Ambassador to the United States of America.

LOUISE WEISS (1893 – 1983)

French Author, Activist and Politician

Weiss was a part of the European women’s suffrage movement during the 1930s, and later active in the French Resistance during the Second World War. She was elected as a member of the European Parliament in 1979, and the main building of the Parliament is named after her.

JULIAN BOND (1940 – 2015)

American Politician and Activist

Bond was an influential figure in the Civil Rights movement during the 1960s, setting up the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. He was elected to represent the State of Georgia in the House of Representatives and the Senate throughout the 70s and 80s. He was then elected Chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

British Politician

Johnson was the Mayor of London between 2008-2016. Before this he served in the Shadow Cabinet as a Member of Parliament. As of 2016 he is the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
